How to make a portfolio video of a website
Published
A website in a portfolio is usually a stack of screenshots, which loses everything that made it good: the motion, the scroll, the way one section hands over to the next. A short video keeps it. The best ones are paced like a tour, linger where the work is strongest, and are sized for where they'll be seen. Here is how to make one with Kovo.
Pick the size for where it's going
In Kovo, choose a named size: Dribbble, 1600 by 1200; Instagram post, 1080 by 1350; Square, 1080 by 1080; Story · Reels · TikTok for vertical; Full HD for a case study page or Behance. Or type any width and height. For a phone version, pick iPhone or Pixel: the site opens with its mobile layout.
Start on the intro, if the site has one
A loader or an opening animation is often part of the design. Switch on the Opener, just above the top of the page, and the video starts from the site's first frame, then moves to your first marker.
Show the work, not every pixel
Add a marker on each moment worth seeing: the hero, a strong section, an interaction, a detail, the footer. Skip what only connects them; the video moves past it on its way. Hold Alt and click into a case study page or a menu to show more than the home page.
Pace it like a tour
Set the pace to Calm for a slow, deliberate tour, or type the length the platform wants. Give the best moment a longer hold, up to 60 seconds, and let small moves go quicker with a marker's speed.
Give it your feel
Choose a curve for how every move eases in and out: Kovo's own, or one pasted from your site's CSS or GSAP, so the video moves the way the site does.
Export it sharp
Export at 2x for Dribbble and case studies, so it stays sharp on high-resolution screens, and at 3x for the phone sizes. Turn on Marker file to get every stop's time, for cutting to music in your editor.
Questions
What size should a Dribbble video be?
Dribbble shots are 4:3. Kovo's Dribbble size is 1600 by 1200; export at 1x for that size, or at 2x for a sharper 3200 by 2400.
What size should a portfolio video be for Instagram?
For the feed, Instagram post, 1080 by 1350, at 1x. For Reels and Stories, Story · Reels · TikTok, which exports at 3x as 1080 by 1920 with the site's mobile layout.
How long should a portfolio video of a website be?
Short enough to watch twice: 10 to 30 seconds for social, up to a minute or two for a case study. Type the length in Kovo and it paces the video to fit.
Can I hide the cookie banner and the chat widget?
Yes. Kovo hides cookie banners for you, and anything else, like a chat bubble or a badge, with Alt+Shift and a click.
Can I show the mobile version of the site?
Yes. Pick iPhone, Pixel, iPad or the Story size, and the site opens as a phone or tablet, with touch and its mobile layout.
Can I add music?
Kovo's videos are silent, so the music is yours to choose. Turn on Marker file and DaVinci Resolve and other editors show every stop as a timeline marker, to cut to the beat.
